Final Recruitment Counselor Introductions

We're happy to share our final round of introductions this morning...just in time for our Greek Picnic this afternoon!

Name: Rachel Kohout
Year: Senior
Hometown: Morris, Connecticut
Major: Pre-Art Therapy

I am currently Panhellenic Council President and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our community!

UE Greek Life has allowed me to continue to stay involved on campus whether it is through leadership positions, participating and watching philanthropic events, or volunteering in our community. I have always been one to be constantly busy and UE Greek Life has allowed me to do that and still stay on top of my academics. All Greek organizations on UE's campus hold academics at a very high standard and that was a major part of why I joined UE Greek Life. But to be completely honest it was the ability for a group of people to take me in as family and push me to be my best that really had me when I joined.

Name: Kathy Cook
Year in school: Junior
Hometown: Evansville
Major: Nursing

UE Greek Life has given me the support of a family on campus, opportunities to help out the community, and has encouraged me to be more outgoing.

Can't wait to meet you!

Name: Hailey Craig
Year: Junior
Hometown: Evansville, IN
Major: Pre-Professional Exercise Science

Deciding to go through recruitment was one of my best decisions yet in college. Before coming to college, I had never thought of going through recruitment nor had any interest. Once college started, I saw that Greek life played a huge impact on our campus, so I gave it a shot. Little did I know Greek life would play such a role in my life. Not only have I gained life-long friendships that I will forever cherish, I have gained leadership qualities and am inspired to be a better person each and everyday because of Greek life. Going Greek could not have been a more perfect college decision for me!

And last but not least our fearless leader!

Name: Samantha Kosmer
Year in school: Senior
Hometown: Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Major: Elementary Education

Welcome to UE! I'm Sam and I am the Panhellenic Council Vice President of Recruitment! I'm so proud of our Recruitment Team this year and I hope you will consider going Greek!

Greek life has given me so many amazing leadership opportunities. I have been on the Panhellenic Council for 2 years and have been able to network with other Greeks from all over the country. I have grown so much as a leader, and a person, from the leadership positions I have held. I have gotten to know so many great leaders on this campus, and I don't think I would have gotten the chance to be such a leader in a community as great as this one.

The Fall semester is quickly approaching and we're excited to introduce you to a few more members of our Recruitment Team!

Name: Tiffani Emery
Year in school: Junior
Hometown: Carterville, IL
Major: Mathematics Education

When I first learned about recruitment, I was excited about the opportunity to meet new people. What I thought was going to be just a way to make friends turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made during my college career.  I have made life-long friendships because of Greek life.  I met a community of women who accept and embrace me for who I am, and I can trust that they will be there to support me in all of my decisions. Greek life made my transition to college life easier, and because if it, I can call Evansville "home."

Name: Katie M. Schmidt
Year in School: Junior
Major: Nursing
Hometown: Mount Vernon, IN

Through UE Greek Life I have became a part of something far greater than myself. College is about trying new things and finding who you want to be in life. The Panhellenic community has allowed me to meet new people, try new activities and provide leadership roles that challenge me.  The accountability factor that a sisterhood holds outside of the home is astonishing! I have had the opportunity to develop bonds that I know I will forever hold and cherish. Without the support of my Sorority and Panhellenic women I know I would not be the young adult that I am today.

Current position: Vice-President of Inter-Greek Affairs

Name: Jackie Samyn
Year in School: Junior
Hometown: Crown Point, IN
Major: Psychology and Criminal Justice, minor sociology

UE Greek Life defies all stereotypes of Greek life, and we rise above the standard.  I am proud to be part of a group that so greatly impacts the school and community.  Greek students are leaders, and we strive as a group to be involved in activities, while also achieving high in academics.  As a member of Greek life, I am inspired to be a better person, especially with such a strong group of role models.

Name: Caroline Bartlett
Year: Junior
Hometown: Indianapolis
Major: Nursing

Greek life has provided me with a home away from home. I'm very close with my family, and therefore, leaving home was difficult. Not only do I have a large group of girls I call my sisters, but I also have a big sister and a little sister. This has been my family while at school. When academics become too much, I call my sisters, knowing they will always be there for me. Whether my big or little sister, or just girls in my year, my sisters have been my rock. They have helped make me who I am, and I think I'm pretty awesome! :P So I'm thinking it's worked out for the best.

Greek Life has shown me that my potential is limitless and I have been able to accomplish so much in my college career because of my experiences in Greek Life. I've taken on many leadership positions in other organizations on and off campus. I've grown in confidence and integrity. I also know what it's like to have an entire community be there for me when I'm going through a tough time. Year: Junior

Major: Biology, Minor in Neuroscience and Psychology

Starting over and coming to a new area can be really intimidating. Add the fact that you have a completely different curriculum level that you probably weren’t completely prepared for. Life can get over whelming and Greek life can help. Now is the time to get involved. As incoming freshmen, everyone wants to reach out and make friends just like you. Greek Life makes it just that much more simpler. You become surrounded by individuals who want you to succeed in whatever path you choose to take and who will help you when you’re struggling. For me, academics were something I really took into consideration. In Greek Life, chances are, there is already an older member with the same major if not similar to yours. Since she/he was already in your shoes, take advantage of that and learn what to expect and how to take notes. This can be applied to college experience in general and not just academics. UE’s Greek Life gave me a group of beautiful women who have similar morals and standards that quickly became individuals who I respect and model myself after. They having already experienced the terrors of freshman year, they were able to help me get through it with less friction and chaos. Even with older members able to give you advice, some things are still for you to learn on your own. Joining Greek Life is an enormous step that intimidates some due to stereotypes they have gathered but UE’s campus contains a different type of Greek community then the larger universities. With a smaller campus comes a more accepting and organized society. Greek Life has allowed me to become involved and stay involved in the community around me. Without Greek Life, Evansville would not have been the same.

Name: Kayla Eastman
Year in School: Junior
Hometown: Zionsville, IN
Major: Pre-Professional Exercise and Sports Science (Pre-OT) with a Minor in Psychology

UE Greek Life has offered me the opportunity to develop myself both personally, through the formation of close friendships, and professionally. Since becoming a member of Greek Life at UE I have been able to develop my character, determine my values, and hone my leadership skills to become the best version of myself, with the help of a close-knit community of individuals.

Recruitment Counselor Introductions...Take 2

We're back with another round of Recruitment Counselor introductions!

Name: Laurel Spurgeon
Year: Senior
Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
Major: Health Services Administration

Coming into college, I really did not know anyone. I had always been in the same school district, so I had never been in a place where I did not already have a set group of friends. Going through recruitment my freshmen year helped me meet people who would become some of my best friends and better adapt to being away from home. Being a part of our Greek system has helped me become more involved in campus activities. UE Greek life has not only helped me grow into a more confident person, but has also helped improve my leadership abilities and supplied me with people I will remain close to after I graduate!

Can't wait to meet you in the Fall!

Name: Lauren Longest
Year: Junior
Hometown: Evansville, IN
Major: Art Education

My closest friendships are a result of my involvement with UE Greek Life. Through the program, I have been introduced to people from different majors that I likely would not have gotten the opportunity to know without such involvement. These friendships have been strengthened due to UE Greek Life's dedication to service and community. UE Greek Life has allowed me to base my friendships on shared values. Thus, I know that I have made true, life-long friends through UE Greek Life.

Changing lives for over a decade

The University of Evansville Greek Life community has many awards and accolades to its credit, but last night one organization received a very special tribute.

Phi Gamma Delta members at Easter Seals Tribute Dinner

The Phi Gamma Delta chapter at UE was recently recognized by the Easter Seals of Southwestern Indiana for their significant contributions to the Rehabilitation Center.  Since the chapter's founding at UE in 2001 they have raised funds and volunteered time with the Easter Seals.  Over the past 13 years the chapter has raised over $90,000.00 to benefit Easter Seals.  Take a moment to read that again...$90,000.00!

Easter Seals' mission is to provide life-changing services that maximize the independence of children and adults with disabilities, regardless of their ability to pay, and to ensure equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in our community.

Phi Gamma Delta works to collect donations year round and through their annual philanthropic event Hot-Tub-A-Thon held in April.

Phi Gamma Delta philanthropy chairmen Austin White stated that the chapter is already hard at work planning for the 2014 Hot-Tub-A-Thon and they look forward to breaking the $100,000.00 donation mark next year.

The Easter Seals Tribute dinner also honored John and Diane Schroeder for their continued service to the organization.  John Schroeder also holds a special connection to the Phi Gamma Delta chapter at UE as he was instrumental in supporting their colonization.

Many student life staff members and University administrators were able to attend the event to support and congratulate the men including Vice President and Dean of Students, Dana Clayton, Assistant Vice President and Director of Residence Life, Michael Tessier, Director of Student Engagement, Geoff Edwards and Assistant Director of Student Engagement, Cara Fabrocini to name a few.

Please join all of us in congratulating the men on this awesome accomplishment.  Their dedication to service and philanthropy is inspiring.

"Leadership is what you do"

I have often struggled with formulating the words to describe how membership in Greek Life at the University of Evansville has changed my life. You often hear phrases such as: “Lifelong sisterhood/brotherhood,” “Becoming a part of something bigger than yourself,” and “Being held to a higher standard,” but is that all fluff and cleverly articulated recruitment jargon?
I recently attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute in Bloomington, Indiana. I spent 5 days exploring what Greek life truly means to me, and how I can share this passion with the rest of my Greek community and the world.
Day 1: I began the experience with self-reflection on what challenges I face as a Greek leader and the importance of trust in order to become an effective leader.
Day 2: The second day dove into a much more sensitive and often neglected area: my values and my organization’s values. I was forced to face the harsh reality of how the Greek community is often portrayed, and I was challenged to determine how to effectively articulate the true value of my experience to those who have not had a similar experience to my own.
Day 3: The third day arrived with much needed encouragement and reflection on our commitment to serve as Greek men and women in our own organizations. We participated in community service projects, and workshops aimed to help us make educated decisions, and create a sense of accountability in our organizations and remind us of our commitment to service.
Day 4: The fourth day was all about practicing what we preach and taking action. “Leadership is not what you say, it’s what you do!” I was given the opportunity to bounce ideas back and forth with men and women of different affiliations than my own from all over the country; I met with a Greek life professional one-on-one, as well as do personal reflection on my organization’s future. The night ended with a powerful session in which each individual was able to share their fraternity creed or purpose with the group, unifying us all, and bringing attention to our shared core values. “We all come from the same Greek alphabet!”
Day 5: The fifth day was filled with laughs, hugs, tears, and inspiration. I left some of the greatest people I had ever met that day, but I am confident that the impact they have had on my life will remain. An inspired, confident, and passionate group of 80 Greek men and women walked out of UIFI ready to make a difference in the world!
Greek life and Chi Omega has changed my life for the better. I am a more confident, passionate, and determined woman. I have been provided life experience that makes me a better leader, a better friend, a better student, and a better daughter. My organization and my community hold me accountable for my actions, and I strive every day to truly live my Ritual and reach my full potential. Greek life gives me an identity on a campus where I was in search of a place to belong. Not only did I gain 100 sisters in my own sorority, but I now have Greek brothers and sisters around the country and around the world sharing my same commitment to service and selflessness.

2013 Grand Alpha winner Kate Schlarf

On Thursday April 18, 2013 the University of Evansville celebrated the 20th Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony.  It is with great pleasure that the Grand Alpha Award was presented on Thursday to a very deserving woman.

Please join us in congratulating Kate Schlarf, Zeta Tau Alpha, as the 2013 Grand Alpha!

Below is an excerpt from Cara Fabrocini, Assistant Director of Student Engagement's speech about Kate.

"... sorority recruitment is about opening the doors to women who seek to advance themselves. To be a part of a network of women for the rest of their lives. Sorority recruitment is about the advancement of womanhood. This year’s vice president of Panhellenic recruitment executed her job duties with the utmost care and she did much more than she was asked. She completely revamped our main marketing material the Greek Recruitment Booklet, changing the layout and content. The book is now fun and exciting to look through. She created a Twitter account for UE Greek Life and took every opportunity to share the benefits of membership, not only in sorority but in Greek Life overall. When a major thunderstorm threatened a night of recruitment she weathered the storm, literally and figuratively, with ease. Adapting easily to changes and helping to communicate to all of our potential new members and sorority members with clarity. Indeed no one will forget Recruitment 2012. For all of her contributions to the Panhellenic Community and the UE Greek life community overall, I am proud to present this year’s Grand Alpha award to Kate Schlarf of Zeta Tau Alpha."
