2013 Grand Alpha winner Kate Schlarf

On Thursday April 18, 2013 the University of Evansville celebrated the 20th Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony.  It is with great pleasure that the Grand Alpha Award was presented on Thursday to a very deserving woman.

Below is an excerpt from Cara Fabrocini, Assistant Director of Student Engagement's speech about Kate. 

 

"... sorority recruitment is about opening the doors to women who seek to advance themselves. To be a part of a network of women for the rest of their lives. Sorority recruitment is about the advancement of womanhood. This year’s vice president of Panhellenic recruitment executed her job duties with the utmost care and she did much more than she was asked. She completely revamped our main marketing material the Greek Recruitment Booklet, changing the layout and content. The book is now fun and exciting to look through. She created a Twitter account for UE Greek Life and took every opportunity to share the benefits of membership, not only in sorority but in Greek Life overall. When a major thunderstorm threatened a night of recruitment she weathered the storm, literally and figuratively, with ease. Adapting easily to changes and helping to communicate to all of our potential new members and sorority members with clarity. Indeed no one will forget Recruitment 2012. For all of her contributions to the Panhellenic Community and the UE Greek life community overall, I am proud to present this year’s Grand Alpha award to Kate Schlarf of Zeta Tau Alpha."

On Wednesday April 10, 2013 we presented the 2013 Greek Awards for accomplishments in the 2012 year.  Below is a summary of our award winners.  Congratulations to all our fraternities and sororities on an excellent year.

Chapter Awards

Chapter of Excellence Awards

Chapters receiving 70 to 79 total points are awarded with the Orange Award.  This year’s recipients are: Lambda Chi Alpha (75 points) and Phi Mu (70 points). 

The Chapters receiving 80 to 89 total points are awarded with the White Award.  This year’s recipient is: Chi Omega (86 points). 

Chapters receiving 90 to 100 total points are awarded with the Purple Award.  This year’s recipients are Alpha Omicron Pi (91 points), Zeta Tau Alpha (96 points), Sigma Alpha Epsilon (96 points), and Sigma Phi Epsilon (91 points). 

Individual Awards

New Member Educator of the Year award.  This award is presented to the chapter member responsible for new member education during the 2012 calendar year.  The award goes to an individual who made the new member class feel closer to the brotherhood and founding principles known and practiced by every member, while teaching them how to grow through their experiences in the Greek community.   This year’s recipient is: Alex Gregurich from Sigma Alpha Epsilon

New Member of the Year award.  This award is presented to the new member who contributed most to the campus and Greek community.  This recipient has shown continual enthusiasm for his chapter and it’s growth while still devoting time and dedication to academics and other organizations on campus such as: Concrete Canoe Engineering Club and being the Freshman class’ Vice President . This year’s recipient is: Austin Cibulka of Sigma Phi Epsilon

Each year, the Greek Awards celebrates the accomplishments of collegiate members and leaders but it is also important to recognize the many efforts of our alumni advisors.  The Advisor of the Year award is presented to the advisor who has contributed to the success of the chapter and the overall development of its members.  The recipient shows his constant dedication to the growth of each member and passion for his fraternity through all he does on a local and national level.  This year’s recipient is: Dr. Anthony Beavers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon

President of the Year.  This award is presented to the chapter president who has contributed to their chapter’s overall success and to the betterment of the Greek community.  The recipient takes care to follow all standards and procedures of her sorority while still showing her love and compassion to each member of the sorority and encouraging each member to strive to reach their potential.  This year’s recipient is: Melanie Bacaling of Zeta Tau Alpha

Greek Man and Woman of the Year.  This award is presented to the student who best represents our Greek community, their organization and the University of Evansville. 

The Greek Woman of the Year has shown her dedication to the growth of members of her sorority as New Member educator and also contributed to many others as a coordinator for UE Reads.  She has shown real growth through her time on this campus.  This Year’s Recipient is: Lindsey Meyer of Chi Omega.

Greek Man of the Year recipient has not only shown his abilities within the Greek system, but also throughout the University of Evansville and surrounding community. This recipient has shown great pride in his fraternity and the University as a whole.  He not only took on crucial leadership positions within his fraternity as the Recruitment Chair, but also founded another organization on campus: Men’s Club Soccer. This year’s recipient is: Shaun Sizemore of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Congratulations to Fiji, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Kappa Chi for winning first place at Musical Madness and congratulations to Phi Kappa Tau and Chi Omega for winning crowd pleaser. Good job to everyone who competed.

Meet Delta Omega Zeta, UE's Local Sorority!

If you’re reading this, you probably know about the wonderful things that Greek life has to offer, but I’d like to tell you about yet another option available to you if you’re a woman that’s looking to go Greek. My name is Amanda, and I’m the president for Delta Omega Zeta, the University of Evansville’s one and only local sorority. You may be wondering what a local sorority is. What makes us different from other Greek organizations, and what do we have in common? I’ll answer those questions for you, and I’ll tell you what we can offer you and what you can expect should you decide to go through our recruitment and become a member.

First of all, being a “local” sorority means that we’re the only chapter of Delta Omega Zeta there is. We only exist here on U of E’s campus. That results in a few key differences:

1.       We don’t have a national organization that governs us. Our constitution and rules are our own, and we have the option of changing and amending them when necessary.

2.       Our recruitment is separate and very different from your typical sorority recruitment. Compared with national sorority recruitment, ours is less formal; we have an open house, craft night, game night, and a formal dinner.

3.       We can afford lower dues. Because we don’t pay dues to a national organization, our dues are the lowest of any of the social Greek organizations.

4.       We have our own house! The other sororities have suites which are like common areas where they have events like meetings and recruitment. We have meetings and part of our recruitment at our house, which 5 members can live in each semester.

5.       We’re a lot smaller. DOZ consists of about 15-25 members, depending on the semester and the size of our recruitment. Being so much smaller means that you really get to know each of your sisters. I can honestly say that I have a genuine and close friendship with each and every member of my organization.

However, local and national organizations are more alike than different. We participate in all the same campus events, like Greek Week. We hold philanthropies to raise money for charity, like our re-enactment of The Price is Right which benefits the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. We also participate in service projects, like a recent one at the Children’s Museum of Evansville and campus-wide projects each semester like National Make a Difference Day. We also have mixers with other Greek organizations, annual formals and semi-formals, sisterhood events, and high civic and academic standards.

Joining DOZ was the best decision I’ve ever made. Before I came to school, I was staunchly against going Greek, but I’m glad I changed my mind. I have found not only great friends, but sisters who will stand with me throughout our lives. Not only have I grown a great deal socially, but I’ve also found some of the most valuable leadership opportunities through my organization. By my second semester in the organization, I already had a position as sisterhood chair; I planned and coordinated sisterhood events which served to help us bond more as sisters. I went on to be sisterhood chair again, then vice president of membership, and now president. I have grown as a leader, as a citizen, and as a friend and sister. The opportunities for growth (and fun!) are endless. I hope you’ll give Greek life a try and see for yourself, and I hope to see you at our recruitment! Hi y’all! I hadn’t really thought about going Greek until I transferred to UE in the spring of my freshman year, but after talking to my older brother who had been in a fraternity here, I decided to go through recruitment and give it a shot. It was hands-down the best decision of my entire college career.

Since I joined a sorority I’ve gained relationships and memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. It really is a home away from home, and a place that you can turn to no matter what. I’ve also had so many opportunities that I would never have had if I hadn’t gone Greek, whether it’s the chance to step up and be a leader in my own chapter or to volunteer and give back to the world in ways that I couldn’t have alone.

Hey ya’ll, welcome to the UE family! My name is Taylor and I am an only child. When I chose to go through recruitment my freshmen year, it was better than expected. My mom and I are best friends and having her supporting me made my decision even easier. I was able to find a home away from home and sisters to help me become a better me! I joined Greek life because throughout high school I was involved in leadership roles and wanted to be able to make a difference in my college community. Becoming a Gamma Chi is another way for me to reach out a helping hand and build up our Greek community. I am also an Orientation Leader (OL) here at the University of Evansville, so I can't wait to meet everyone!

Before I came to college, I knew absolutely nothing about Greek life and I really didn't think it would be something I would be interested in. In fact, when it came to choosing between UE and the other school I was deciding between, part of the reason I choose UE was because Greek life was such a big part of the other school and a very large percent of students were Greek and I did not think it was for me. That all began to change during Welcome Week when I started to learn about the Greek community here at UE. I realized that maybe I should go through recruitment, if for nothing else than to meet people. I very quickly realized that joining a sorority here meant that I could find my home away from home. I am so glad that I joined the Greek community here. I have met a lot of people that have made my years at UE truly the best years of my life so far!

One of the aspects of Greek life I love most is the opportunity to serve as a recruitment counselor or Gamma Chi during recruitment. This is my second year as a recruitment counselor and I truly look forward to helping a wonderful new group of women find their own home away from home!

Hey everyone! Going Greek was not something that I thought I would ever do, but it was one of the best decisions that I ever made in college. Not only did it give me a family away from home - which was great because I live 9 hours away- but it gave me so many opportunities to do things that I otherwise wouldn't have. Greek life on campus is just so much fun to be a part of. The philanthropy events as well as other community service around Evansville are a fun way to give back. Being in a Sorority has made me more confident in myself as a leader and just as a person. I hope Greek Life changes your life as much as it did mine!

Hello! My name is Amber and I am Panhellenic President. I am also involved in other campus organizations such as Admissions Ambassadors, PTA club, and EXSS club. I decided to come to UE because of the small class sizes and the PTA program.

Initially, I had no interest in going Greek however, being 4 hours away from my family and friends was tough. I was looking for a new group of friends and decided to see what going Greek was all about. I met a lot of really amazing women from all affiliations but when I started to get the know the women in my sorority, I instantly knew that was where I belonged. I found a place I could truly be my self and grow into the person I am meant to be. Being Greek at UE is more than just having fun. It is about getting involved on campus, giving back to the community, and making amazing memories along the way. I have gained so much more from UE Greek Life than I ever thought I would.

My parents were nervous when I first told them I wanted to go Greek however, they supported my decision. Now that they see how amazing UE Greek Life is, they agree it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Being Greek has made my time at UE unforgettable and I am excited for you to have the same experience! I can not wait to me you all!

Hi, I'm Jenna and I'm the Panhellenic Vice President of Operations.  When people ask me why I went Greek and why I stay Greek, I tell them about everything I have gained from my membership.   Going through recruitment as a freshman, I was looking for my second home, a place to put down roots in this new town and school so far from home. I most certainly found that true sisterhood and so much more in the UE Greek community. My sisters both in my chapter and others inspire me to be the very best version of myself everyday. In UE Greek life I have found a place where I can find balance between academics, philanthropy, and all other aspects of college life. Being a part of UE Greek life has not only given me some of my best friends and the ability to be well-rounded, but has also given me the tools I need to be a leader both during my time at UE and after.
